| Pit Fired/Saggar Fired -- ALL NATURAL The pot is first dried to the “leather hard” stage and then laboriously burnished with a stone or the back of a spoon. This smoothes the clay to achieve a patina. The ware is then bisque fired in an electric kiln to over 1800 degrees. The final firing is done at the beach, in the desert, mountains & campgrounds in a fir pit or campfire. Each piece is fitted into a container or saggar, made of clay, bricks, paper or tin and packed with locally collected combustible material, sawdust, salts, seaweed, and coppers. Saggars are placed in the pit and a bonfire is built around them. After several hours of burning and cooling, the pieces are removed, cooled and then waxed to a sheen resembling polished stone. Colors are achieved from the effects of the fire and range from black to pink, salmon, yellow and red. Because of the uncontrollable environment, pieces can break during the process, making the successes even more precious and each vessel unique.
